We ONLY use Paypal and have been doing so since 2006. No client has ever been scammed, and I’m talking thousands, probably tens of thousands of payments over that time. We’ve lost money a few times due to people using fake cards and the like. But it’s negligible.

Follow the links on our donate page and you can be 100% sure that your payment will reach us (less Paypal’s extraordinarily generous commission) and also that Paypal will protect your credit card information with their lives. It is, after all, the very basis of their business. We are assured that their security is world class, and while their customer service can be appalling, I have no reason to disbelieve that.

From what you say, however, you were scammed by people PRETENDING to be Paypal, which is an entirely different matter. If someone asks you to visit a webpage to make a payment, via Paypal or any other payment processor, or sends you a link in an email, of course you need to be very sure that the webpage or link is genuine before you enter your credit card details.

It’s very easy to set up a scam using a fake webpage. One way to protect yourself is to not follow links but to navigate separately to the location where you expect to make the payment and, once you are assured that you are in the right ‘place’, initiate the payment process from there. Much like real life.

Don’t take the scammer’s word for it and follow the link he or she provides to the fake site. Instead, navigate in the usual way to the your favourite ‘easy’ news website. Once there, look for the ‘Donate’ link in the menu. To be sure you’re in the right place, check for the padlock symbol in your browser’s address bar, and that the URL is what you expect it to be.
