Abdul El-Sayed,
medico epidemiologo di 41 anni
e figura di spicco
della sinistra progressista americana,
ha vinto le primarie democratiche
per il Senato, in Michigan,
superando la deputata moderata Haley Stevens.
La sua affermazione è considerata
un segnale della crescente influenza
dell’ala progressista del Partito Democratico.
A novembre affronterà
il candidato repubblicano Mike Rogers
per un seggio ritenuto decisivo

Nato a Detroit da genitori egiziani,
El-Sayed ha studiato all’Università del Michigan,
a Oxford grazie a una borsa Rhodes,
e si è laureato in Medicina alla Columbia University.
Prima della politica
ha lavorato come medico
e dirigente nel settore della sanità pubblica.
Si è fatto conoscere nel 2018
candidandosi alla carica di governatore del Michigan.
Tra le sue principali proposte
figurano il Medicare for All,
maggiori investimenti nei servizi pubblici,
salari più alti
e un sistema fiscale più progressivo.
È sostenuto da esponenti come
Bernie Sanders e Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Molto critico verso la politica israeliana a Gaza,
definita un genocidio,
chiede la sospensione
degli aiuti militari statunitensi a Israele
finché non saranno garantiti i diritti umani.
Ha inoltre rifiutato i finanziamenti
della lobby filo-israeliana AIPAC,
scegliendo una campagna sostenuta

Quindicenne italiano in carcere a Malta: il caso ancora da chiarire
Un ragazzo italiano di 15 anni,
residente a Malta con la famiglia,
è in carcere da oltre due mesi.
È stato arrestato il 25 maggio
dopo aver telefonato alla polizia
con la notizia di una bomba
nella sua scuola.
L’edificio è stato evacuato,
ma non sono stati trovati esplosivi.
I genitori hanno descritto
condizioni molto dure:
il figlio avrebbe trascorso i primi giorni
in un carcere per adulti
e, dopo il trasferimento
in una struttura minorile,
sarebbe rimasto quasi sempre
chiuso in cella.
Le autorità maltesi hanno respinto
questa versione
e sostengono che il giovane è seguito,
continua a studiare
e si trova in buone condizioni.
Il caso è diventato più complesso
di un falso allarme bomba.
Il ragazzo è accusato
di diversi reati gravi,
anche legati alla criminalità online
e a materiale illegale
riguardante minori.
La famiglia sospetta
che alcuni criminali
lo abbiano manipolato
e ricattato su internet.
La richiesta di scarcerazione
è stata respinta
e la prossima udienza è prevista
per il 19 agosto.

Aeroporto di Lipsia, drone con esplosivo e collisione nei cieli
L’aeroporto di Lipsia in Germania
ha vissuto momenti di forte tensione
e massima allerta,
a causa della presenza di droni
nell’area dello scalo.
Il traffico aereo
è stato temporaneamente bloccato,
provocando la sospensione dei voli
e l’attivazione immediata
delle procedure di emergenza
per garantire la sicurezza della struttura.
La situazione si è aggravata
dopo la segnalazione
di un potenziale impatto in volo
tra un aereo cargo operato da DHL
e un oggetto volante non identificato
durante la fase di manovra
nei cieli della città.
L’episodio ha fatto scattare
approfondite verifiche di sicurezza
che hanno portato al ritrovamento
dei resti di un drone
equipaggiato con del materiale esplosivo
nell’area aeroportuale,
atterrato o intercettato nei pressi
di un velivolo da trasporto
di fabbricazione ucraina.
Gli investigatori e i servizi di sicurezza tedeschi
hanno avviato un’ampia indagine
per chiarire i fatti
e stabilire la provenienza del dispositivo.
Tra le ipotesi in campo c’è anche quella
di un gesto dimostrativo
per seminare panico.
L’episodio ha riaperto il dibattito
sulla vulnerabilità degli aeroporti europei
di fronte alle minacce dei droni
e sulla necessità di rafforzare le difese aeree
attorno alle aree sensibili.

Ritrovato il corpo di Luigi Cavallari nel lago di Vico
La mattina di martedì scorso
è stato trovato il corpo
dell’ottantaquattrenne Luigi Cavallari,
disperso dal 27 giugno nel lago di Vico
(in provincia di Viterbo, nel Lazio).
L’uomo è stato probabilmente
colpito da un malore
durante una gita in barca;
le ricerche del corpo,
a cui hanno partecipato sommozzatori,
robot sottomarini e sonar,
sono durate circa un mese
a causa della scarsa visibilità
nel lago di Vico,
che è di origine vulcanica
e ha un fondale molto fangoso.
Luigi Cavallari era un professore
di tecnologie dell’ambiente
all’università di Chieti-Pescara,
ed era il marito della ministra
della famiglia e delle pari opportunità
Eugenia Roccella;
anche la ministra era presente alla gita in barca
in cui è avvenuto l’incidente.

Musica, è morto Francesco Guccini
Francesco Guccini,
uno dei più grandi cantautori italiani,
è morto a 86 anni.
Si è spento a Pavana,
il paese dell’Appennino tosco-emiliano
dove viveva,
circondato dalla moglie Raffaella,
dalla figlia Teresa
e dai familiari.
Guccini era nato a Modena
il 14 giugno 1940.
Ha scritto canzoni diventate famose,
come La locomotiva,
Un vecchio e un bambino,
Auschwitz e L’avvelenata.
Oltre che musicista,
è stato anche scrittore,
autore di romanzi
e attore occasionale.
La famiglia ha annunciato
funerali privati,
mentre a settembre si terrà
una cerimonia commemorativa pubblica.
Il presidente della Repubblica,
Sergio Mattarella,
lo ha ricordato
come un poeta e un intellettuale,
autore di canzoni
che parlano di impegno
e di giustizia.
Bologna lo ha ricordato
con una folla di persone
riunitesi spontaneamente in Piazza Maggiore
e in via Paolo Fabbri 43
(dove Guccini ha abitato)
per cantare insieme
le sue canzoni.

Europei di tuffi: oro per Pellacani e Pizzini
Chiara Pellacani ed Elisa Pizzini
hanno conquistato l’oro
nei tuffi sincronizzati femminili
dal trampolino di 3 metri
agli Europei di Parigi.
Le italiane hanno svolto
una gara quasi perfetta,
passando alla prima posizione
dopo il terzo dei cinque tuffi.
Grazie a due esercizi finali
molto difficili e ben eseguiti,
hanno raggiunto 308,07 punti,
battendo Ucraina e Germania.
La Gran Bretagna,
tra le favorite,
si è ritirata dopo un grave errore.
Per Pellacani, 23 anni,
questo successo rappresenta il quinto oro
in altrettante gare nella competizione.
E’ la prima tuffatrice italiana
a raggiungere questo traguardo.
Aveva già vinto nel “team event”,
nel sincronizzato misto con Matteo Santoro
e nelle prove individuali da 1 e 3 metri.
L’atleta romana ha spiegato
che questi risultati
nascono da molto lavoro
e dimostrano il suo salto di qualità.
Il suo prossimo obiettivo
è continuare a migliorare
assieme alla squadra
e avvicinarsi sempre di più

Also, I’ve noticed that some native speakers of Italian tend to blend the last syllable of one word with the first syllable of the next word. For Italian language learners, it’s important to say each syllable distinctly, saying each word as if it were a new word for the speaker as well as for the listener.. Tom enunciated each syllable while keeping his speed natural – not too fast and not too slow.
Perhaps this idea could be shared with the readers EIN is hiring. All the best. Diane Horban

I totally don’t agree, Diane, sorry.
Speech is a series of phonemes and syllables, delivered with emphasis, intonation, and so on. Saying each syllable distinctly, as you put it, is not how speech works (the ‘imPORtant’ PARts of what you’re SAYing should STAND OUT). Syllables merging with each other, consonants being ellided, and all the other features of ‘connected’ speech are totally normal. You may not easily master them yourself when speaking Italian, but it’s something to aim for. Speaking ‘clearly’ will just make you sound foolish.
But this site is primarily about developing listening skills, in particular transitioning learners to the point when they feel ready to take on ‘authentic’ listening, for example TV/radio news transmissions. Getting people used to texts which are, at least at times, unclear and/or fast is a ‘feature not a bug’, as they say.
Keep in mind, please, that the listening text is supposed to be supported by the written text, the presence of which makes speed of delivery and ‘slurring’ (natural features of connected speech) irrelevant, at least to learners who use the material appropriately.
Hence no ‘slow down’ tool, hence no ‘go back and listen to that last word’ tool, hence no translation.
This is all about gettting you used to ‘real’ long-form listening. Which means developing micro (picking out phonemes, syllables) and macro (understanding meaning via stress and intonation patterns over longer chunks of speech) comprehension skills.
Focusing on a distinct word, the way it’s pronunced, it’s meaning, and so on is more than likely to impede rather than facilitate your progress.

I think she did great! The only problem I had was with the room it was recorded in. There’s noticeable echo compared to other recordings and it can make it difficult to hear what’s being said.

Per 11 agosto 2026. I liked this narration of EIN. My favorite aspect is that the spoken words are not slowed down. It makes for realistic hearing.

Thanks for the feedback, Michele. The editor did slow it down, by 10% she told me (using the audio software), but even though, I thought the speaker was rushing rather. There were some nice, natural intonational features, though, which compensated.
I’m expecting less positive feedback from those who prefer things slow and clear…
