Russia, petroliera in fiamme al largo di Sochi

Martedì sera un violento incendio
è scoppiato su una petroliera,
al largo di Sochi,
città russa sul Mar Nero.

Le fiamme
e una densa colonna di fumo nero
sono state riprese
da diverse persone sulla costa.

Secondo i media locali,
la nave coinvolta
sarebbe la Aframax Rio,
una grande petroliera
battente bandiera liberiana,
con una capacità
di circa 95mila tonnellate di greggio.

L’equipaggio,
composto da 23 cittadini indiani,
è stato tratto in salvo.

Secondo fonti ucraine,
l’incendio sarebbe stato causato
da un attacco con droni navali.
Le autorità russe, però,
non hanno ancora
confermato ufficialmente
la causa del rogo.

Per precauzione,
sono state chiuse
le spiagge della zona
e sono in corso controlli
sulla qualità dell’aria.

Elezioni anticipate in Spagna

Il primo ministro spagnolo,
il socialista Pedro Sánchez,
ha convocato elezioni anticipate
per il 29 novembre,
dopo che il parlamento
ha respinto due decreti del governo
sulla crisi abitativa.

È la terza volta che Sánchez
anticipa il voto dal 2018,
come già avvenuto
nel 2019 e nel 2023.

Il premier punta a concentrare la campagna
su casa ed economia,
temi sui quali le politiche progressiste
raccolgono ampio consenso.
Tuttavia, i sondaggi mostrano
il Partito Popolare in testa
e Vox in crescita,

sono state inviate
unità di contenimento
da Vicenza, Rovigo,
Padova, Verona e Treviso,

spostamenti e attività all’aperto.

The audio quality has been poor over the last couple of weeks – can you improve it?

You’re right, Jane. It’s been poor.

We’re trying to improve it but we’ve replaced a very experienced and technically-minded young man with a handful of sometimes rather scatty Italian teachers who have no experience with audio-recordings…

And you’ll appreciate that this is a very-low budget operation, I’m sure.

I have read and listened to your news for years. It has always been good- useful and enjoyable. Thank you.

The very poor quality at the moment makes it hard to continue with the broadcast.

It shouldn’t be too difficult to record the session.

I’m sure it won’t help you if you dismiss your staff as ‘scatty Italians’.

    Be nice to them.

“scatty Italian teachers” was the phrase I used, Dave, as compared with the very smart young man (my son, not a teacher, now doing a masters in Computer Science) who did the recordings previously. Tom’s been difficult to replace, as you have heard.

The people doing the recordings now are not my ‘staff’, so to speak, but freelancers, selected and managed by the editor, who I’m fortunate enough to be married to but for which reason have limited influence over. Stefi’s a wonderful person, yet reluctant to tell people their work isn’t good enough.

Recording the text shouldn’t be difficult, I agree. The issue is quality control, first at the level of the freelancer doing the actual recordings, who emails what they presumably feel is adequate work, then at the editorial level. If the editor receives an .mp3 that is of poor quality, there needs to be push-back. Unfortunately this hasn’t happened, probably due to the publishing deadlines. When an audio is not listened to until shortly before it needs to be published, then there remains no time to redo it, only to attempt to fix the most obvious problems.

We’ll get there. Feedback like yours only helps me make the case for ‘better than this’, so thanks!

        Hi there.
I too enjoy your recordings immensely and am very grateful for them.
However the quality of the recordings has diminished significantly since your son’s departure and I do hope that this can be resolved. I find that I very quickly abandon the broadcast now as the recording clarity (and maybe the accent(?), although one can adjust to this over time) make it very difficult to follow.
I say this as a ‘critical friend’ and hope you’re able to address the problem.
        Thanks
        Peter

Your feedback is appreciated, Pete. However, we’ve been trying for several months to address the problem, with varying degrees of success.

At this point, unless a venture-capitalist walks through our door waving bunches of $100 bills, so enabling us to hire a professional, we’re stuck with three or four amateurs who work from their various homes using their own dodgy equipment (for just €15 per bulletin!)

I’d suggest that if the audio quality causes you to abandon the broadcast without listening to the end then either you have better things to be doing with your learn-Italian time, or you have your priorities wrong, Language is often not clear, both in terms of its composition and delivery.

My family talks nonsense at me from several rooms away, while expecting me to understand. Of late, my hearing has been failing, too. And often my attention is not always 100%. All of these factors are common.

And yet, I’m very, very good at ‘listening’: to my native tongue, to italiano, and to three other languages. Very, very good doesn’t mean perfect, of course. It means I can FOLLOW, no matter the audio quality, the background noise, the child blowing his police whistle, and so on.

Getting to that point has taken hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands of hours of practice.

What counts with foreign language listening practice is totally not the audio quality. It’s what your brain is doing, or not doing, as you listen.

We put up this site and have run it for eight years because in 2018 no one was offering free Italian audio with text support, which I believe is helpful to learners.

If there are other people doing this now, then great, you have alternatives. If not, then don’t give up on us. As our donation ads say “Your Italian will thank you for it.”

Ciao Daniel, I think I’ve commented a couple of times how much I like Francesca reporting (and she’s good writer , too). Grazie for letting me add my opinion

    • wpx_easyital says

      October 9, 2026 at 11:21 am

Yes, I like Francesca’s recordings, too. And her ebooks. But different people have different availability, which can change at short notice, so it makes little sense (from the point of view of resilience) to rely on just one when we could instead have a small team.

And then there’s the idea that hearing different voices is good for learners.

    Ciao Daniel,

I’ve been listening to EIN for about a year or so. I’ve recently taken a summer break and started listening again today. I noticed that the reader is now different and the sound today was very “echo-ey”.

I wish the former reader who I now understand is your son, Tom, all the best in his CS masters. Selfishly, I hope he graduates quickly.

I did listen back through September and August to see when the change occurred. During that period, there was a female reader who I thought was quite good. I do not know her name. I’ll comment again when I hear her.

Thank so much for EIN. I’ve missed it and I’ll try to hang in there and lend support as you look for a consistent reader with a good Italian accent and good tech. I’m sure that’s not an easy ask.

    Gratefully
    Robin
